Island & Pacific Labrador Retriever Club – Conformation Specialty Championship Show – 12/10/19

Thank you very much to the committee for inviting me, and you the exhibitors for presenting me with your dogs to judge. Grateful thanks too to my first class steward Dr. Sophia Fanous who expertly steered me through the format of the classes. Both the very kind, thoughtful and extremely generous hospitality of the club and the quality of your Labradors have made it one of my most memorable judging appointments.

The range of activities organized by the club is to be commended, promoting not just conformation and good looks but plenty of mental stimulation too. I was especially intrigued with the Live Search training, and two youngsters that I know of were shown under me. Fascinating to hear about this, and how the training is started for it, and I even saw a little video clip of puppy training on a ladder. I also met the lady who acts as a live dummy for the dogs to train on! Well done all who participate in this, so very worthwhile, and it looks most enjoyable for dogs and handlers.

I was impressed with the overall fit hard condition of the dogs, sound movement, excellent double coats, well shaped and clothed true otter tails.

Jr Puppy (6-9 months) Male 1st Carter, Delong & Nichol’s MAKTAWAE D’KID IS HOT TONIGHT, 6 month chocolate baby well muscled hard fit condition, confident and free moving, pleasing expression. I learned later that he has already commenced training as a live search dog.

Island and Pacific Labrador Retriever Club Specialty Show & Sweepstakes

Critiques

I wish to thank the Island and Pacific Labrador Retriever Club for the honour to judge their show. I had the pleasure of seeing many beautiful and outstanding Labradors that represent our breed. I very much enjoyed this event and the outstanding camaraderie of the exhibitors cheering each other. The raffle was wonderful and so nice that many came to the dinner. So nice to meet everyone and enjoy conversations.
Until we meet again.

A few noted but fixable areas that breeders need to be cautious of are; the round eyes and close narrow rears. A Labrador needs to move true and no impeding of the hocks almost touching. The Labrador eye should be oval and tight.

My Winners are as follows:

BOB- #144-GCH SWEETWATER AMBER HAZE O’ER TCHESINKUT- An outstanding quality bitch with no exaggeration, a melting eye expression, ear set lovely ,lovely oval burnt sugar eye , nice tight lips, length of muzzle to head in proportion, which flowed into a lovely reach of neck and layback. Beautiful moderate depth of chest, lovely tight feet , length of leg with a superb quality front assembly. She moved true and she had a lovely rear with a beautifully strong thigh and nice well let down hocks. On the go around she moved effortlessly. Her top line was solid. She was in full jacket and the texture was harsh and firm to touch. Beautiful double coat. Tail was beautifully wrapped and set and carriage was spot on. I was pleased to award this bitch the breed. A bitch I would be proud to own. And she was yellow.

BOS/BEST VET-# 114- GRCH MAKAILA’S MIDNIGHT MAGIC CGC JH WC RN- from the Vet class 7-9 years old.

This dog caught my eye right away with the classic breed type, beautiful headpiece with a superb ratio of length or muzzle to head proportion. Beautiful dark burnt sugar eye and tight lip. Lovely reach of neck and flowing into a beautiful layback with no break. He had a lovely front assembly and lovely tight feet. Move true on the down and back and another one who move effortlessly using his front and rear in proper reach and drive. Top line was very good. Lovely double coat and texture for a black.

WD- #111-LAB’SPB YU-PITER- OPEN YELLOW CLASS

This boy had a beautiful headpiece and excellent ratio of muzzle to the head proportion. Nice tight lip, Lovely oval burnt sugar eye and beautiful black pigment. Used his front well on the down and back, with no breaking in the wrist. Lovely length of leg and front assembly, move well and true, and hocks well wet down. Beautiful double thigh and
covered ground efficient. Coat was in good condition, tail set was good, and tail carriage was slightly low when going around the ring. A boy I would be proud to show.

WB/BOW- #132-BLACKPEARL’S SIT STILL LOOK PRETTY- OPEN YELLOW CLASS

This girl stood up to her name and she was pretty. Beautiful quality bitch with no exaggeration. Classic headpiece, beautiful soft expression and melting burnt sugar eye. Nice tight lip. Beautiful reach of neck into a beautiful layback and front assembly. Proportion for length of leg to height was spot on. Well let down hocks. Superb quality coat and texture and beautiful wrapped tail set and carriage. Moved true with beautiful reach and drive in harmony. She had a lovely rear to match with a lovely double thigh. I did consider her for breed.

BEST PUPPY- #122 MAKAILKA’S BLACK BETTI-SR PUPPY CLASS

She was a very happy puppy. Nice tight melting eye with beautiful expression. Lovely double coat and texture. No break in the wrist on the down and back. She used her front and rear in harmony. Nicely let down hocks. Moderately proportioned with no exaggeration. Lovely tail carriage and set. Nicely wrapped tail. I would be proud to own her.
